Lowly Spects is an indie folk/alternative band based out of Orange County. The group started with Ethan Hulse’s music and is a continuation of his project and EP “I Don’t Feel Simple”, released in summer 2011. The band’s presence has been well received in Orange County, San Diego, and Los Angeles. They have quickly become known for great and memorable shows at popular venues such as The House of Blues, Detroit Bar, and The Observatory. The band has received several great write ups in KROQ and OC Weekly for shows and interviews as well as Hulse being named best singer/songwriter for 2011 by OC Weekly. They were nominated for Orange County Music Awards best live band as well as other nominations including: best new artist and best folk. Lowly Spects draws from influences like Wilco, Arcade Fire, and Elbow in creativity and writing. At it’s core, their music consists of honest lyrics and music that involuntarily catches your ear, compels, and ultimately gets underneath the surface of things.

Responding To Negative

A lot of people have been asking us how we felt about the showcase performance Tuesday night, and about the some of the negative reviews we all found the next morning. How should we respond? To be clear, we had such a blast playing this showcase and were so thankful to all our fans who came out and all the new friends we met too. We stand behind our performance and songs. We thought it was a great show for us and heard great feedback from so many people. Anytime there is mixed reviews it is easier to hear the screaming one negative voice over the hundreds of positive. It’s easy to take things personal, or get angry at the bias and misjudgement on the us, the songs, and the set, but far better for us to see it for what it is, accept it, and shrug it off. Real objective criticism, even harsh at times, is necessary for us if we want to grow and get better as artists, but negativity that is nonobjective and rude is not worth buying into. This is true for all the bands and artists. Take every review with a grain of salt. Don’t hear every opinion as truth. We are not discouraged as a band. It’s just an opinion, and if we continue to play music and put ourselves out there, all the more opinions, opposition, and praise to come. You will never have people love your music unless there are those who hate it too.

Congratulations to all those who moved on to the best live band and best live acoustic finals! We’ll be at the finals shows to support, and we’re excited to be up for best folk, best pop, and best new artist March 3 at the awards! See you all then!
